woolig – a family business from Latvia

wooligs‘ journey began in a diverse northern Baltic climate. A small but abundant country of Latvia where winter temperatures dip to -25 °C and rise to summer highs of +25 °C. Inherently, this led to creating an all-season slipper that can be worn to provide comfort all year round.

“Nordic climate provides us with a fair share of grey and chilly days. This makes warmth and comfort an essential part of everything we do. We find joy in spotting rich colours in nature around us and hope these slippers will bring cozy & colourful touch to your day.”, wollig.

We talked to Renārs Špāks, the CEO of the company about his business, and his contribution to our International Christmas Journey.

IWCR: Could you tell us a little about Woolig, your philosophy and company values?

IWCR: Vai Jūs varētu mums nedaudz pastāstīt par Woolig, savu filozofiju un uzņēmuma vērtībām?

We are a family company specializing in the production of wool slippers for several generations. We use wool, a natural material to create slippers that are organic, without enhancements, but with a berry-bright color. As in nature – beauty is in simplicity. The bright autumn leaves, the bare silhouettes of tree branches or the cold mornings of spring are things that inspire us.

Mēs esam ģimenes uzņēmums, kas specializējas vilnas čību ražošanā jau vairākās paaudzēs. Mēs izmantojam vilnu, dabīgu materiālu, lai radītu čības, kas ir dabīgas, bez pārspīlējumiem, bet ar odziņu – košu krāsu. Tāpat kā dabā – skaistums ir vienkāršībā. Košās rudens lapas, kailie koku zaru silueti vai pavasara dzestrie rīti ir lietas, kas mūs iedvesmo. 

IWCR: What is your daily work? How big is your team and how do you develop new ideas?

IWCR: Kāds ir Jūsu ikdienas darbs? Cik liela ir Jūsu komanda un kā Jūs attīstat jaunas idejas?

As I have said, we are a family company. Right now, it is my wife and I, but we also receive some advice and involve others with our work. Of course, their contributions are more emotional, but since they perceive this business as part of our lives, rather than as a job, slippers have “grown” with us all.

Kā jau minēju, esam ģimenes uzņēmums un tāpēc darbojamies ne tikai divatā ar sievu, bet ik pa laikam arī bērni vēlas iesaistīties ar kādu padomu vai darbiņu. Protams, viņu pienesums ir vairāk emocionāls, bet, uztverot šo biznesu kā daļu no mūsu dzīves, nevis kā darbu, čības ir “saaugušas” ar mums visiem. 

IWCR: You and your team are taking part in IWCR’s annual charity initiative this year. What prompted you to support the International Christmas tour?

IWCR: Šogad Jūs un Jūsu komanda piedalāties IWCR ikgadējā labdarības iniciatīvā. Kas Jūs pamudināja atbalstīt Starptautisko Ziemassvētku ceļojumu?

Since we have an invitation, we are happy to participate in the various charity events within the limits of our capabilities. We are also very pleased to be involved. We have been a supporter of DOD5, another Latvian charity, since its inception and look at this event in the long run. IWCR addressed its experience and success over the years, helping those most in need. We feel it is a great honor to be part of something big through IWCR.

Saņemām uzaicinājumu, un tā kā labprāt piedalāmies dažādos labdarības pasākumos mūsu iespēju robežās, tad IWCR arī ar prieku iesaistāmies. Esam DOD5 atbalstītāji kopš tā pirmsākumiem un ar gaišām domām raugāmies uz šo pasākumu ilgtermiņā. IWCR uzrunāja ar savu pieredzi un gadu gaitā veiksmīgo darbību, palīdzot tiem, kam tas visvairāk nepieciešams. Būt daļai no kaut kā liela caur IWCR mums ir liels pagodinājums. 

4. IWCR: Are you planning to introduce some new product and how did this idea come about?

IWCR: Vai plānojat ieviest kādu jaunumu un kā radās šī ideja?

We are scheduled to offer wool products such as blankets and rugs, perhaps as early as this year. Also, for some time, a cherished dream has been smaller-size slippers for children. This dream, however, has been the affected by the virus now and in the next year. 

Ideas come from thinking about our customers and listening to them.  If you put your client’s wishes first, it helps you to prioritize the ideas, so they can be realized when the time is right.

Mums ir plānots piedāvāt tādus vilnas produtkus kā segas un pledus, iespējams,ka jau šajā gadā. Tāpat jau kādu laiku lolots sapnis ir mazāka izmēra čības arī bērniem. Šo sapni gan vīrusa ietekme ir atlikusi uz nākošo gadu,  Idejas rodas domājot par mūsu klientiem un ieklausoties viņos. Ja klienta vēlmes noliek pirmajā vietā, tas ļoti labi palīdz salikt idejas pa prioritātēm, kuras realizēt vispirms, kurām vēl jānobriest. 

IWCR: Your favorite place in Latvia?

IWCR: Jūsu iemīļotā vieta Latvijā?

We are very fond of traveling and getting to know different countries and cultures. At the same time, we greatly appreciate the possibility of enjoying four seasons in Latvia, which prevents you from falling into a routine and offers you to look at already known places and things in another light. Latvia is rich in beautiful places, it would not be right to highlight one, but our favorites are different natural places, such as marsh trails, extensive forests and different seasides.

Mums ļoti patīk ceļot un iepazīt dažādas valstis un kultūras. Vienlaikus ārkārtīgi novērtējam, ka Latvijā ir iespēja izbaudīt četrus gadalaikus, kas neļauj iegrimt rutīnā un piedāvā apskatīt jau zināmas vietas un lietas citā gaismā. Latvija ir bagāta ar skaistām vietām, vienu izcelt nebūtu korekti, bet mūsu iecienītākās ir dažādas dabas vietas, piemēram, purvu takas, plašie meži un dažādās jūrmalas.

Traveling is one of the best ways to enjoy the arts and the vibrant gradient of cultures from around the world. While the discovery of places around the world seems out of range at the moment, the IWCR members invite the local and international community to be a tourist across the nations – while staying in Latvia.
