Riga Milk Formula Charity Project is a project run by volunteer Maria Rickardsson in collaboration with The Mother Teresa Sisters in Riga, Latvia. Funds are raised to purchase milk formula and if fund allows, diapers and wet wipes, which are handed out by the Sisters based on who is in greatest need of support.
The project also collects donations such as clothes, shoes, household effects and regular food. The project has been running for over 15 years and has received funding from IWCR for the last 10 years.
The goal of the project is to deliver milk formula to children under the age of 12 months, living in poverty and who have mothers who for different reasons can not breastfeed them. Unless provided milk formula from this project, these children are at risk of being fed sugar water as their main source of nutrition. The aim is to provide a healthier and more nutritional option in order to optimise their development and to provide a better start in life for these children.
Every month we reach approximately 100 families who get to share in what has been donated and distributed by the Sisters. Out of these families 16-20 families have children under the age of 1 year and can receive milk formula for their children. All donations of clothes etcetera that we collect are distributed to these families and to other persons in need who come to the Sister’s house.
