Dear members,

the history of the Latvian National Opera goes back to 1782. It started with the Rigas 1. pilsetas teatris or Riga City Theater, which was the first permanent theatre in Latvia and the Baltic. 

The first attempt to create a Latvian national was is 1893, but the origin of Latvian opera dates back to 1912. After the First World War, the opera restarted in 1918 as Latvju Opera. The debut performance, on January 23, 1919, was of Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer. 

In the 1990s, the opera house underwent large-scale reconstruction and restoration of the interior, finished in 2001.

Join us for an exciting tour through this historical landmark and peek behind the scenes of the New Hall with 300 seats and where the creative staff realizes over 200 performances and several symphonic and chamber music concerts a season.
