Activities and Information for Kids in Latvia

If you know where to go, family fun for everyone is easy to find in Latvia.

Parents and their children may wonder how to find family-friendly activities in a new country. Fortunately, there’s more than we could possibly mention to keep everyone entertained with a host of G-rated fun in Rīga and Latvia. Enjoy  the Latvian nature

Rīga Zoo & Mezaparks
Kids will love seeing around 470 animal species at the zoo, including elephants, monkeys, crocodiles, eagles, hippos, camels and snakes. The pretty zoo is set in a forest-like environment by a lake.

Mezaparks, an elegant Rīga suburb full of mansions and tall pines, has a huge recreational forest park filled with things to do. The kids can hire skates, bikes and sail catamarans on the lake. There’s also an attraction to get kids into environmentally friendly activities.

Take tram # 8 or 11 from Barona iela in the city centre until the “Zoologiskais dārzs” (Rīga zoo) stop.

The Beaches
Jūrmala’s an historic spa town with kilometres of beaches, forests and a safe pedestrian street in Majori. In this main village you’ll find tourist information, outdoor eateries and a huge turtle sculpture that the kids will enjoy.

On the west coast of Latvia, there are also fantastic beaches at Ventspils and Liepāja. Ventspils has a “children’s town”, complete with swings, playground and a mini train they can ride.

Tervetes Nature Park
In 2005, this attraction won a national prize as the most family friendly. Use maps to guide you along nature trails in the Elf and Fairy tale forests, lined with witches huts, elf buildings and sculpted characters created by Latvian children’s author Anna Brigadere. Have a picnic or ride bicycles. Kids can meet Sila the good witch daily 12:00—16:00.

80 kilometres south of Rīga, near the town of Tervete.

Dzintari Forest Park
Jurmalas biggest and most children orientated outdoor park. Kids and adults can go rollerblading in the summer and in winter-time they can go skiing.

Children can play on three different playgrounds, according to their age or their wishes, while enthusiasts of active leisure can go to the skate park or play street basketball. Other:

  • A 36 m high viewing tower with 12 platforms appropriate for various height categories.
  • Streetball courts
  • Two cafes
  • Public bathrooms
  • Parking lots

This park is a great place for both lovers of active recreation, and also for those who prefer a leisurely stroll in the crisp sea and pine air.

Down on the Farm
The Latvian Association of Country Holidays has gathered hundreds of places offering accommodation in the Baltic countryside. This well-organised service allows you to search for places offering particular attractions, even ones interesting for kids. You can also choose accommodation on farms, where guests can help with farm chores like feeding the animals.



Ethnographic Open-Air Museum

Fresh air and safe open spaces make this a great place for kids. Old houses exhibit life in centuries past, and at summer weekends see craftsmen show how things were made back then.

440 Brīvības gatve, Rīga. Open daily 10:00—17:00. Adults Ls 1.50, kids Ls 0.50. Take bus # 1 from Brīvības iela in the city centre until the “Brīvdabas muzejs” stop (around 30 minutes).


Rīga Motor Museum
Newly renovated, state of art museum, that will put into shame many European Museums. Two floors offer a fantastic collection of antique cars and motorbikes that’s sure to interest young and old. There’s a well equipped cafe on the side.

LIDO atpūtas centrs (Recreation Centre)
Skating, eurobungy, shooting-gallery or kid’s driving school with electric cars are but a few of the things the little darlings can enjoy. This huge log cabin complex also serves enough Latvian food to feed an army.

76 Krasta iela, Rīga. Take bus # 17e from Satekles iela (D-4) by the Rīga central post office to the last stop (around 15 minutes). Amusement park open daily 12:00—21:00. Unlimited rides (except eurobungy and mini-cars) Ls 3.30 weekdays & Ls 4.50 weekends.

Esplanāde park (in the summer)

What’s nice about this attraction is that there’s a beer garden and grill. So parents can relax while the kids bounce on trampolines, jump in an inflatable castle or drive mini electric cars.

Līvu Aquapark
Let the kids get wet while they sample the eight water slides ranging from gentle to practically vertical. The complex has outdoor slides and pools too. The huge modern complex also offers a wave pool, shallow pools, an indoor river, eateries and more.

24 Viestura iela (K-7), Bulduri, Jūrmala. Take a Jūrmala train from central station in Rīga until the Bulduri stop (about 40 minutes). Cross the railway line and walk 7 minutes. Open weekdays 11:00—22:00, weekends 10:00—22:00. Entry for 2 hours: adults Ls 10.90, kids (6—14 years) Ls 7.70.
Go Planet
This modern indoor wonderland is good for rainy days. Go-carting, 4D movie theatre, video simulators, laser labyrinth, bumper cars, carousels and more.

The Latvian Puppet Theatre
Young audiences will appreciate the highly-professional shows and exquisitely made puppets. Performances are in Latvian and Russian, but since many shows have songs and dances, all kids should enjoy them. They are also playing the Classical childrens stories (ex H.C Andersen). There’s also a puppet museum.

Laumu dabas parks (Laumu nature park)
The park is located near Talsi in Kurzeme. There are very nice marked informational trails, mini-golf, a trampoline, playground, cafe and overnight accommodations with sauna.

Adventure Park Mezakakis
This is a sporty activity or ‘a walk in the trees’, and it is designed for people that are fond of active lifestyle and spending time in open air. Mezakakis is suitable almost for every age and it’s a favorite for families and office colleagues. Park is built in the forest hillside of the primeval valley of Gauja.
Mezakakis in Sigulda
In Mezakakis Park in Sigulda there are 46 barriers placed in total that are divided into four paths depending on difficulty level: the green, blue, red and black paths.
Each path begins from and ends on the ground. Furthermore, in each path the last barrier is the ride down the rope with the help of a special scroll. Height of barriers in different segments of a path is various: 2 to 17 meters.
