The oldest church in Rīga – St. John’s

This month we like to introduce to you Svētā Jāņa Evaņģēliski luteriskā baznīca (St.John’s Church), the oldest house of worship in Riga. In 13th century, the church was build on the site of the bishops palace of Albert of Rīga. Albert of Riga or Albert of Livonia was the third bishop of Rīga in Livonia, who allegedly founded Rīga in 1201.

Later in 1234 the small chapel was dedicated to John the Baptist, and was continued as a Dominican chapel and parish church until 1523. In this year, Riga City Council confiscated St. John’s Church. Almost 60 years later, in 1582, a Latvian congregation acquired the church. With Riga’s great city fire on 31 May 1677, but also during the 18th century St. John’s Church sustained damage several times and was reconstructed.

Did you know about St. John’s legend ?

In the 15th century two monks wished to become saints and were immured in the wall. While they were still alive, Riga residents fed them through a special hole. But they were not consecrated. There is still a cross-shaped hole in a wall where both bodies lie.

English Services in Historical Setting

Our member Connie Cortright, whose husband works with the Latvian Lutheran Church, is a member of this church. Connie shares with us the latest news about English worship services.

St. Johan is located at Skārnu iela 24 in Old Town Riga, St. John’s Lutheran Church has once again started up the English worship services. Originating in the 13th Century, St. John’s is a perfect spot to surround yourself with history while singing hymns and hearing Bible readings in English.

The church was first built as a chapel for the monastery when Bishop Albert took up residence in Riga. After expanding over many centuries, St. John’s today is one of the most visited churches in Old Town. Visitors are met with the very unique and ornate net vaulted ceiling.

Worship in English

Since Covid restrictions have been lifted, St. John’s has once again started offering English speakers an opportunity to meet together and worship God. They are holding services on the first and third Sundays of the month at 12:30. Sermons will be preached by Pastor Charles or Latvian Pastor Gints. Connies husband, Pastor Charles, will be helping out with the services, including preaching the sermons once a month.

It is located in the center of Old Town in Riga. Between the shopping centre “Galerija Centrs” and St. Peter’s church (with the longest church tower in Riga) at Skarnu Street 24. Entrance is through a small street between Skarnu street and Jana seta.
