The IWCR and its members seek to raise funds to provide support and financial assistance for families, young mothers, the elderly and the abused in both Riga and the Latvian countryside. To help our limited funds and donations go even further, we aim to channel the gift aid directly to a small number of carefully researched institutions and charities which share these common aims.
By working closely with and listening to the day-to-day staff and management of these organisations, it is sometimes possible to identify and provide specific items or products which make a practical difference to peoples’ every-day lives.
Good examples include:-
- electric cookers for a day-care centre for slightly mentally-handicapped young people
- prescription glasses for two young women in prison
- personal care products for female prisoners
- a washing machine/tumble-dryer for elderly farmers, so that they could launder their clothes
- we provided wood for the heating of the crisis centre in Liepaja, Martinsmaja
- winter/summer shoes for schoolchildren
- arranging outings for pre-school children
- organised a Christmas party for children at the Tukums orphanage, in association with the 'Garage' Wine Bar & Restaurant
- helped Zvannieki Orphanage with a donation to repair the roof of their kitchen
- provided dry foods for the soup kitchen of St. Saviour's Church
We hold a charity meeting once each month – details can be found on the website. If you are interested in getting involved email: board.iwcr@gmail.com
