The IWCR donates approximately 12,000 LVL to Latvian charities each year, and also collects and donates a large quantity of clothing, food, household goods and personal care items.
Below are some examples of the work we are suporting throughout 2010:
Missionaries of Charity – monthly food supplies for the soup kitchen : LVL 2,800 per year.
Chabad Soup Kitchen - food supplies for the soup kitchen (Meals on Wheels): value LVL 200 per month and 200 LVL extra in December and April.
Hope for Children: Every year we buy school supplies and summer and winter shoes for the children at these three day-care centres in Riga, which care for around 50 children. In addition, the profits from our monthly lunches provides food-bags which the children take home to their families.
We also supported one of the centres which urgently needed a new door and replacement for a broken window in autumn 2009.
Illguciems Women’s Prison: We help imprisoned young mothers and young adults with personal care, toiletries and sanitory products, with the kind support of Dove.
With the generous support of a benefactor we have also been able to arrange for the provision of glasses and prescription lenses for a number of women.
We are also hoping to assist young mothers on initial release from prison in the form of initial support with accommodation. Just 40 LVL per month can make a big difference.
Give a Hand: The Club supported a pilot project for elderly farmers, living remotely in the countryside, by providing them with a tumble drier, at a cost of 350 LVL.
Ronald McDonald House Charities Latvija: Support for a fundraiser to provide medical care for disadvantaged youngsters (500 LVL).
Vilpulkas Sakumskola: Books and educational supplies to the value of 250 LVL have been provided to this school located in the Latvian countryside, close to the Estonian border.
Brengulu Pagasta Sakumskola: An industrial dishwasher, provided by the IWCR, has made a significant improvement to the facilities at this country school. It's 60 children each receives a free breakfast and dinner, supported by the parents, but this makes for a lot of washing up! Cost 1,300 LVL
Vitolu Foundation: We have donated 1,300 LVL annually in 2008 and 2009 to cover one year’s scholarship for a female student to support her law studies.
Namins Crisis Center: We help by providing school supplies plus summer and winter shoes totalling approximately 1,650 LVL per year.
Thanks to a generous Norwegian donation of new summer/winter/sports shoes, for children and adults (valued at approx.: LVL 7.500,00) several of the above organisations received appropriate footwear.
We continue to collect seasonal clothing and toiletries donated by members of the IWCR and distribute them to the recipients/institutions mentioned above.
